Southern California Edison posts $2.15 billion in profits as it seeks backroom bailout on wildfire costs

Southern California Edison posted $834 million in total net profits in its SEC filing today, its second-highest Q3 earnings in over a decade. So far this year, the utility has earned $2.15 billion in profits.

Customers are paying for these profits. SCE customers have seen bills climb 101% over the past decade, a rate far outpacing inflation. Nearly one in five California households are behind on energy bills, with SCE customers owing on average $833.

Less than three months ago, the L.A. County Fire Department concluded that the devastating Eaton fire was sparked by SCE equipment. On the earnings call, SCE pushed for a special legislative session to cap its shareholder liability for utility-sparked wildfires—with ratepayers footing the bill for costs above the cap.

SoCal Edison was the single most profitable investor-owned utility in the country in 2025, pulling in over $5 billion in net income — driven by recovering wildfire costs from customers.
